Saddleworth Golf Club, formed in May 1904, is a par-71 moorland course laid out on Wharmton Hill by Dr Alister MacKenzie — architect of Augusta National, Cypress Point and Royal Melbourne.
A nine-hole course was in play from 1904; MacKenzie devised the full eighteen in 1913, and the present 5th is reputed to be one of his original greens. A thousand feet above sea level, the course commands panoramic views over Dobcross, Greenfield and Uppermill, and its free-draining turf keeps it firm through the seasons.
The clubhouse offers a comfortable lounge and bar with Sky Sports, and a separate full-size snooker room for when the Pennine weather closes in. Practice facilities and a chipping green sit behind the car park, and visitors and societies are made welcome.
